Elementary Library

Curriculum Overview

The elementary library program at The Churchill School promotes a love of reading, inspires curiosity, and cultivates the skills that are necessary for critical thinking and lifelong learning. The curriculum incorporates literacy and information skills to encourage critical thinking. The library provides a warm, welcoming environment with a rich diversity of materials (picture books, chapter books, audiobooks, age-appropriate magazines, reference books and more) so that students can pursue both academic and personal interests.

Lower elementary students enjoy weekly library classes that encourage creativity and independent reading. Students are exposed to a wide variety of literature, authors, and genres through storytelling and follow-up activities.

Upper elementary students learn how to navigate and evaluate print and online resources as they utilize new technology and programs for research. The librarian collaborates with classroom teachers to incorporate library resources and skills into classroom curricula, with particular emphasis on developing research strategies and information literacy.

Borrowing Policies

All elementary students are given time to browse and borrow on a weekly basis.

  • Cluster A students are encouraged to borrow one book at a time for a one week period.
  • Cluster B, C and D students are encouraged to borrow a total of two books at a time for a two week period.

Parents, please help your daughter or son to return library books on time so that she/he may continue to check out new books on a weekly basis.

*Parents are also encouraged to stop in the library and create a Parent Library Card in order to check out additional materials.

ES Library Schedule

The library is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day. Library materials may be checked out during those hours.

The elementary school library class schedule is available on the calendar below. The calendar is updated regularly so please do check back for the most current information, including author visits and other special events.

Meet the Librarian

I’m Paula and I’m very excited to introduce myself as Churchill’s new Elementary Librarian. Growing up, libraries played a special part in my life because my family moved around a lot and we would often visit our local branch looking for books about our next new home or the comfort of a familiar story. I received my BA in Art History from Temple University in Philadelphia and my MS in Library Media from Pratt Institute here in New York. When I’m not in the library, I’m most likely to be at a local art show, learning how to skateboard or, of course, reading.

Please do feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns:
